Historic Maine Homes - A New Book Released by Down East

(Camden, Maine) Every generation builds houses to express their beliefs and aspirations. Historic Maine Homes: 300 Years of Great Houses, explores the architectural history and stories behind the notable homes of Maine. Author Christopher Glass and photographer Brian Vanden Brink bring their skills and perspectives to bear on homes built in a rich variety of styles, including Colonial, Federal, Georgian, Italianate, and more. Many of the locations featured, such as the Victoria Mansion in Portland and Montpelier in Thomaston are now open to the public as museums.

“We do not truly know where we live until we know its history, and the dreams of those who have lived here before we came along,” writes Christopher Glass. “Learning the stories of the owners, or of the styles and builders of our architectural history,” continues Glass, “is a way of coming to know more profoundly what it means to call a place ”home.”

Glass and Vanden Brink first teamed up on the 2004 book At Home in Maine: Houses Designed to Fit the Land. Glass is a practicing architect with a Masters Degree in Architecture from Yale University. And Vanden Brink has been photographing architecture for more than 25 years, and has been featured in Architectural Digest, Architectural Record, Metropolitan Home, Cottage Living, New York Times Magazine, Custom Home, Yankee, and Down East magazine.
