Few Maine harbors pose for as many photographs as this one along the south coast. Of course, only a small percentage of its many fans see it looking like this, after a fresh snowfall, and fewer still would recognize this cove if they saw a similar picture from even forty years ago. When a famous artist first painted this southern Maine village onto the map in 1898, there was no harbor to speak of here, just a marshy river that led to a natural cove. It didn’t begin to look like it does today until 1941, after a massive dredging project. Change seems to be the only constant here — the basin saw more than a million dollars in damage when the area was hit by a Patriot’s Day storm in 2007. Late last fall, a new committee was proposed that would advise the town’s selectmen on how to help determine what this cozy cove will look like in the next half-century.
