Savvy gardeners are increasingly using native plants in their landscape designs to attract wildlife and for their natural beauty ranging from subtle to supremely eye-catching. Native Plants for Your Maine Garden is aimed at home gardeners interested in native flowering perennials, foliage perennials, grasses, groundcovers, shrubs, and trees to enrich their gardens and for their cold hardiness, disease resistance, and noninvasive characteristics.

Author, Maureen Heffernan describes how to choose the right plants for varying locations and cope with shallow-ledge soils, coastal sea spray, boggy or moist soils, or woodland conditions, and which plants are least attractive to deer. This informative guidebook includes two sample garden designs one for a full-sun butterfly and bird native plant garden and one for a lightly shaded woodland-type border garden.

Maureen Heffernan is the executive director of the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay. Prior to that she served as education coordinator at the American Horticultural Society and as director of education and public programs at the Cleveland Botanical Garden.
