Spring Time is Taking Hold
March 24, 2011

While it's true that it snowed four or five inches a few days ago, right after we spent the weekend waking up our yards, we are still confident that spring is taking hold. There are crocuses blooming in the flower beds here at Down East, and buds are popping on bushes. The Maine lakes are unfreezing bit by bit. The feeling of quiet before the explosion of activity and excitement that is coming is palpable.
March 27 is Maine Maple Sunday - if you are in Maine, make sure to get out and support local producers. Enjoy! And don't forget to join us on Facebook!

What Time is it?
Down East author Howard Mansfield is an expert on the history of time. His recent book, Turn & Jump, explores the relationship between time and place, and takes us from a time when the two were inseperable to the present. In his recent op-ed in the New York Times, Mansfield tackles Daylight Savings Time, a shift in time that we are all still adjusting to here at Down East. Read the New York Times article here.

Time to Make Some Maple Syrup
Kathy Gunst was beginning to wonder if spring would ever come, and then..."just the other day, mid-March, when I wasn't sure I could take much more, things shifted. And if that wasn't enough - it was time to tap the maple trees. Plus a maple-glazed bacon recipe and maple-espresso granita.

An Asian Oasis
Asian food shines at the midcoast's newest dining mecca. The small, unassuming Long Grain restaurant tucked in between Rite Aid and Zoot coffee shop on the main street in Camden has a paper menu taped to the door that functions as a sign. Inside, twenty-six seats create an intimate and unpretentious atmosphere. The decor is an unlikely mix of homey New England and stark East Asian street cart.

Fuzzy and Fierce
A grave misunderstanding about pussy willows has taken root in the public mind. To be blunt, it's a gender thing. People imagine there is something dainty, something soft and delicate, something pretty – something, to come down to it, feminine – about this well-known feature of earliest spring, whose fuzzy catkins pop open about the time the first robins are jostling to get their worm.
