Here in Maine – and elsewhere in the world of skiing – most ski enthusiasts know the name John Christie. The author of the Down East book, The Story of Sugarloaf, fell in love with the mountain in 1954, and he’s been a Sugarloafer ever since, even serving as general manager of Sugarloaf/USA during the 1960s. Recently, Bill Green, host of the perennially popular television program “Bill Green’s Maine” recently chose and rebroadcast his segment about Christie as one of his “Best of 2008.” The programming aired January 10 on WCSH-TV6 in Portland, Maine.
In The Story of Sugarloaf, Christie tells the history of a skiing Mecca that began as a single trail hand-cleared by a bunch of hardy skiers. He also details the mountain’s ups and downs, including the resort’s explosive growth during the 1960s, the financial slide that followed, and finally Sugarloaf’s comeback and expansion. Knowledgeable about the sport and business of skiing, Christie is the inside source for the story of one magnificent mountain. The book is the winner of the Skade Award presented by the International Skiing History Association.
