Potter Gail Kass has been throwing clay in her Harpswell studio for three decades. She paints directly on the unfired surface of each piece with a glaze to create the harmonious landscapes that blend from green hills to blue skies to white clouds.
I use a very straight shape with my pieces, Kass says. It can't get too busy for the landscape to speak.
Kass' sugar, creamer, and large pitcher, priced from $26-$70, are both simple and functional. They are available at the Maine Potters Market, a fifteen-member cooperative in Portland.
