Where in Maine?
If you're the largest sardine cannery in the eastern United States, in fact the only remaining sardine cannery on the eastern seaboard, you've earned the right to have a gigantic, sou'wester-wearing fisherman as your symbol. Especially if you're located in a photogenic community along the Maine coast. The canning business in these parts dates back to the 1870s when the Franco-Prussian War interrupted the international trade in sardines and a clever Down East entrepreneur realized he could provide New Englanders with fish they could no longer import from France. For a time Maine could boast of having forty-six canneries, but today there is only this one left in business. Founded in 1927, it's still a major local employer in this hard-working town. A New Brunswick seafood giant purchased the company in 1999. Then, in 2004, that little fish was swallowed by an even larger fish (or rather merged with it), when the operation became part of the Bumble Bee Foods, LLC empire. Can you name this venerable business and the harbor it's located in? (Oh, yes, we noticed that rooftop, too. Bad gulls!)
