Most Pine Tree State visitors will at one time or another seek out that quintessential of all Maine tourist attractions: a lighthouse. Whitehead Light Station (P.O. Box 242, Brunswick, 207-465-3031, or 207-729-7714, www.whiteheadlightstation.org [2]), directly off the coast of Spruce Head at the mouth of Penobscot Bay, encourages its visitors to partake in an extended stay. At this historic island, where Thomas Jefferson authorized the construction of a lighthouse and dwelling in 1803, guests can participate in five-day adult enrichment programs. On the docket for 2009: Mindfulness Stress Reduction (Aug. 6 – 11), Cooking with Daisy Martinez (Aug. 21 – 26), and The Art and Science of Beer (Aug. 28 – Sept. 1). Ranging from $1,000 to $1,500, the programs include instruction as well as transportation to and from the island, accommodations, all meals, and excursions in the island boat.
