Down East 2013 ©
Where does Spider-Man go when he visits Maine? This 290-yard island beach Down East. At least that’s where the actor who plays the webcrawler could be seen walking with Charlize Theron in the 1999 movie, The Cider House Rules. This sandy strand has more biogenic content — in this case, crushed shells — than any other beach in Maine thanks to the protective arms of rocky coast surrounding it. It also has more sand per yard (rather than, say, rocks) than any beach north of Pemaquid, unusual because it’s not at the delta of a major river. The surrounding headlands in three directions are almost as magnificent as the frigid ocean, and several beautiful hiking trails are accessible from this iconic strip of sand. Directly behind the beach you’ll find a bog packed with beaver lodges and all manner of birdlife. The sum of the place is an experience hard to replicate anywhere else in Maine, or the country. That’s what drew J.P. Morgan to buy the land here — and is what inspired his granddaughter to donate it to the public in 1949. Happy sixtieth!
