In March, the company famous for utilitarian burly boots, hunting gear, and outdoor accessories released a fashion line for a new kind of Maine look. The L.L. Bean Signature line (800-650-6364, www.llbeansignature.com [2]), designed by Alex Carleton, a hip Portland designer and founder of Rogue’s Gallery, is a combination of seaside chic and modern woodsman. Think Ralph Lauren meets Woolrich. The clothes are far from radical — look for more flattering cuts and plaid that has a little more pizzazz. From a wrap dress a la Diane von Furstenberg (the pattern is lobster buoys) to sportsman chino shorts, this line is definitely part hipster, but it does manage to retain the L.L. Bean look that generations of Mainers have come to depend on. Plus, it includes updated styles of Bean’s best accessories — bags, boots, belts, and more.
