An open house doesn’t usually involve a hike up hundreds of winding stairs resulting in a spectacular view of Maine’s coastline. But this September 12 from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M., fifty-two Maine lighthouses are opening their doors on the same day: It’s called Open Lighthouse Day, and it’s presented by the U.S. Coast Guard, the state of Maine, and the American Lighthouse Foundation. From West Quoddy Head Light with its red-and-white candy stripes, to Portland Breakwater Light with its Corinthian columns, to the formidable, fortress-like Matinicus Rock, Maine’s maritime structures will be open to the public — some for the first time ever.
