Officials are urging Mainers who heat with oil to begin planning for winter supplies after the average price of home-heating oil rose 4 cents in less than a week. As of June 1 the average per-gallon cost of number two oil was $2.15; southern and southwestern Maine had the lowest average price of $2.06 per gallon. Kerosene prices currently average $2.58 per gallon statewide. According to the Maine Office of Energy Independence and Security, prices are rising fast. “So far this year the price of crude oil has risen nearly $33 dollars since the market’s low point in February,” says OEIS Director John Kerry. “It is important to prepare for next years heating season today through careful planning and budgeting.”
