The Bangor Daily News is reporting Lyme disease, a tick-borne illness first diagnosed in Lyme, Connecticut, is on the rise in Maine. The disease is carried by deer ticks commonly found in wooded ares, fields and areas with overgrown bushes or leaf piles. Infected ticks spread the disease through bites. A rash may appear in the area of the bite within a month of being bitten by an infected tick and can be followed by flu-like symptoms of fever and muscle aches, according to the Maine Center for Disease Control. A conference to be held at the Point lookout Conference Center, Northport, will highlight Lyme disease on May 15 and 16th.
