The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland will forgo traditional mass celebrations, including the “peace be with you” hand greeting and sharing consecrated wine, until further notice. The changes are in response to threats of swine influenza, which spreads by contact with infected respiratory fluids. Frequently washing hands with alcohol-based hand sanitizers is one of the best ways to avoid spreading the virus. The diocese has asked all priests to use hand sanitizers before and after giving Holy Communion.
