As Portlanders bask in the glow of national praise for their city's robust food scene, Down East Mainers are quietly savoring the fruits of their own "buy local" movement. Membership in the Machias Marketplace, a buying club linked with several Washington County farms, has tripled in the past year, necessitating a move to a larger space. Members enjoy organically grown vegetables and fruits, pork and chicken, goat and cow's milk and cheeses, and rustic breads. “Many people think that because we are a poor county, we don’t have good food,” Marketplace coordinator Inez Lombardo told the Bangor Daily News [1]. “Nothing could be further from the truth.”
