Connected to the Falmouth mainland by a causeway, Mackworth Island has long been a favorite haunt of Portland area residents seeking the solitude of a shore getaway just minutes from home. Soon they'll have to pay for the privilege of walking its 1.25-mile path. Faced with a tight budget, the state Bureau of Parks and Lands plans to charge a $2 admission fee ($3 for nonresidents)at Mackworth, as well as Cape Elizabeth's Kettle Cove and Colonial Pemaquid. "We're not real happy about it," bureau director Will Harris told The Portland Press Herald , "but it's probably the best of the choices we have."
