With six weeks to go before the June 8 primaries, the seven Republicans and four Democrats vying for their party's nomination have already spent $5.2 million. That's almost as much spent on the entire 1994 gubernatorial campaign. The large field of candidates is one reason spendng is so high. Another is the wealth of some individual candidates "You have some wealthy individuals who, as is their right, are spending some of their own fortunes,"Dan Billings, a Waterville lawyer and supporter of Republican candidate Steve Abbott, told The Portland Press Herald.
