Atlantic salmon have returned to the Penobscot River in record numbers.
As of 3 p.m. Wednesday, 255 adult salmon had been captured at the Veazie Dam fish trap, more than twice the previous record set on the same date in 2008. The Veazie trap is the first barrier to upstream passage on the river.
Mild, dry weather may account for the spike, according to Norm Dube, a fishery biologist for the Department of Marine Resources’ Bureau of Sea-Run Fisheries and Habitat.
