Compared with the forced removals in New York's Zuccotti Park, or the Occupy Oakland riots, it's nice to see the legal questions surrounding Occupy Maine have thus far been dealt with through a peaceful permit process. Occupy Maine gave a detailed proposal [1]for a six-month stay that outlined how they plan to handle the winter, safety precautions for themselves and the public at-large, as well as their overall goals and mission statement.
Portland's Public Safety Committee, however, rejected the proposal [2], citing the increase in violence and arrests within the park during the occupation. The vote will go to the City Council next week where they will decide to accept or reject the same proposal.
