Maine potato farmers breathed a sigh of relief [1] as the United States Senate voted to block a bill aimed at limiting the consumption of potatoes in school cafeterias. Collins, who has a past of picking potatoes in Maine's Aroostook county, co-sponsored a bill with Mark Udall, Democrat of Colorado, that prohibits the Agriculture Department from setting limits on the amount of starchy vegetables eaten within schools.
Collins says the amendment, which passed unanimously, will make a real difference in school districts, but there are those within the state lamenting the loss of a bill that could have improved a child's health and dietary habits. Collins Declares Victory in Potato Wars [2]
