"Rocky," the record breaking lobster caught in Maine this week, has been freed.
The 27-pounder (12.25 kg) was released back into the ocean on Thursday. He had been trapped in a shrimp net near Cushing last week and turned over to the Maine State Aquarium in East Boothbay.
Rocky is the largest lobster recorded caught in Maine. He was 40 inches long. The state restricts fishermen from keeping lobsters that measure more than 5 inches (12.7 cm) from the eye to the start of the tail.
The largest lobster ever caught weighed 44 pounds, 6 ounces, and was between three and four feet long, according to the Guiness Book of World Records. It was caught off Nova Scotia in 1977. It was between three and four feet long and estimated to be one hundred years old.
The largest lobster in the scientific record was caught off Cape Cod in 1974 and weighed 42.5 pounds, according to Diane Cowan of The Lobster Conservancy. A male, it was estimated to be one hundred years old.
