Portland recently began installing eighteen new parking meters across the city as part of a pilot program. The meters cost $8000 each, but are solar powered and accept credit cards for payment as oppose to being coin-operated. The new meters will also help Portlanders from paying for unused time. By passing data between cell towers, an hour of parking paid is good not just for that one spot, but around the entire city. This also means people hoping to find free, leftover time will be out of luck. The meters are set to go live on May 21.
