Washington Outsider

The Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram are hiring a new Washington correspondent. Bart Jansen is leaving that post after six years, during which he wrote a lot of stories with tenuous connections to Maine, probably because Jansen's connection to the state is also tenuous. Unlike the guy he replaced, the exceptionally well-connected Steve Campbell, he never lived here. The impression I got from his final column on June 17 was that when he visited Maine, he spent most of his time learning how to pronounce the quaint local names. No surprise there. That was already the impression I had from reading his stories.
Will the next D.C. staffer be another tourist? Stay tuned.
