Why do geneticists pay special attention to Deer Isle and Stonington?
Residents of the two island towns are uniquely in danger of suffering from a rare disease called spastic paraplegia gait, or SPG4. The hereditary affliction has been traced to an early settler from France and is carried by members and descendants of the island’s Hardy and Haskell families.
