Kicking and screaming, here we come, the editors of Down East Magazine being pulled, at last, onto the World Wide Web. Truth be told, we've been itching for this opportunity for a long time. When you edit a monthly magazine - especially one with a lead-time as long as Down East's - you tend to miss a lot of good stories. Out of the blue, George W. Bush will announce that he's meeting Vladimir V. Putin in Kennebunkport. But by the time we can chime in on this improbable summit, at which Walker's Point will do its best impersonation of Yalta, it's already old news. Well, that's no longer the case. With this inaugural blog, dubbed NxE in honor of our longstanding magazine department "North by East," we now have a daily perch on which to crow. Here you'll find the editors of the magazine, along with occasional guests, discussing the Maine issues of the day. It's our intention that these discussions be candid, informal, and without a scintilla of self-importance. If ever you detect the overpowering odor of b.s., we hope you'll call us on it in the comments section. It's true that this blogging thing is a new deal for us dead-tree types. But it's our hope that this give-and-take becomes a regular part of our day - and yours. So let's start talking about Maine…
