For more than thirty-three years this fair in the heart of the St. John River Valley has celebrated the proud culture of Maine’s own Cajuns

This popular festival attracts thousands of people each year with international cuisine and a free program of music, dance, and immigrant journey stories. In addition, marketgoers will find a hundred vendors offering a wide assortment of items, including flea market goods, crafts, art, jewelry, and clothing. There will be a dedicated children’s area with crafts and games. The Bayside World Market & Fair is sponsored by the Bayside Neighborhood Association.

Cultural crafts from the Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Maliseet, and Micmac tribes include traditional handcrafted one-of-a-kind ash splint and sweetgrass baskets, flutes, dream catchers, birch bark and quill baskets, beaded and quill jewelry, wood carvings, native dolls, walking sticks, and art works and display of numerous books about the Maine tribes. Following the grand entry will be demonstrations in pounding ash, bead working, traditional basket making, birch bark canoe presentation. Throughout each day will be traditional native drumming and dancing as well as native foods.

More than fifty folk artists and craftsmen from the northeastern U.S. and New Brunswicl, Canada, offer hand-made musical instruments, twig furniture, quilts, folk painting, turned wooden bowls, dried flowers, herbs, pottery, photography, stained glass, spinning, weaving, felting, clothing, baskets, iron work dolls, wood carvings, jewelry, and more.

The Garlic Festival includes talks, luncheon, cheese demo, and barn dance.

Highlighting the abundance of creativity generated by residents of this island community, painters, printmakers, sculptors, and fine-crafters display, sell, and demonstrate their work while talented musicians entertain with lively tunes.
